by Amber Simmons

The debut lineup for YG’s upcoming girl group, BABYMONSTER, will finally be revealed at midnight on May 12th.

On May 11th, YG Entertainment launched a countdown timer on their official site, announcing that the unveiling of BABYMONSTER’s debut members is imminent. The rapidly counting down timer and the five question mark cards etched at the bottom arouse curiosity.

Previously, executive producer Yang Hyun Suk stated that from the early planning stages, BABYMONSTER was considered to be a five-member group. However, specific details about the member lineup remain a secret.

Meanwhile, BABYMONSTER is the first girl group to debut under YG in about seven years after BLACKPINK. With aggressive promotions over a long period, including the release of performance videos and the production of a debut reality show, the group has garnered attention as the most anticipated newcomer in the music industry for 2023.

Candidates for BABYMONSTER include 7 girls, 3 from South Korea (Ahyeon, Haram, Rora), 2 from Thailand (Pharita, Chiquita), and 2 from Japan (Ruka, Asa), adding to the anticipation. They are talented individuals who have mastered multiple languages including Korean, English, Japanese, Thai, and Chinese.

The group has also secured global competitiveness in the mainstream music market early on. Major foreign media outlets, including the U.S’s Billboard and the U.K.’s NME, have spotlighted BABYMONSTER. Notably, Billboard selected them as a ‘K-pop Artist to Watch,’ expressing high expectations that BABYMONSTER will create a new wave in the K-pop genre.”

Regarding BABYMONSTER, YG commented, “We have gone through a stringent internal evaluation prioritizing not just individual talent but harmony within the team. Under the principle that the most important entity to an artist is their fans, we have been attentive to the voices of all those who have been watching the growth process of the seven candidates. After comprehensively evaluating everything, we have formed the best team, so you can look forward to them.”
